A Pair of Cuba-Headed Aid Vessels Reported Lost subsequent to Leaving Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailing vessels carrying relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Initiated
Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least nine total sailors, per a navy statement.
The ships had been expected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Humanitarian Support to the Island
Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island endures multiple national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are equipped with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"The group is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Earlier Relief Delivery
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the island.
That boat, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, cycles and food.
Larger International Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations called off in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Political pressure have intensified lately, with comments from various leaders emphasizing the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to previous comments, a high-ranking official from Cuba insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and ensure the well-being of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
