Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
