Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a wide array of heroes, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, fiends, and dark forces increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to begin their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, attacking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could help the party access locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them few options but to travel to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Explorers and Planners tables.

Viewers can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
