Los Angeles Battles Historic Heat Just Days Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that led to inundation across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now seeing abnormally hot temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Readings
During the day Friday, the thermometer soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, as reported by weather officials. This breaks the previous daily record for this date, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was set in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on NWS maps for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sudden spike in heat arrives just after a massive winter storm that pummeled the area recently. That system delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, causing evacuation orders for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also caused a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is coming. Temperatures were expected to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by late Friday.
Additional areas that hit 90°F featured Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the high 80s.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate temperatures in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the week ahead.
