Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Warnings Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this signified the weather could to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a expected uptick in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
