NY Launches Online Platform for Public to Report ICE Images After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state attorney general has launched a recent digital platform asking locals to provide visual evidence of ICE operations throughout the state. This step comes just a day after a major enforcement action rattled NYC's Chinatown, prompting widespread demonstrations.
US Citizens Detained During Raid
A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were detained and held for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Protests broke out in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents is entitled to reside free from terror," state officials declared in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and documented immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to share that footage with us. We are committed to examining these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."
Form Details
The platform includes fields to submit images and video footage of the raid, as well as a field to indicate geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must tick a box that states that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or official statement."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included dozens of government officers, took place in a famous district of NYC where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded widely – typically to sightseers.
Footage of Tuesday's raid reveal several masked and armed personnel securing and holding a man, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers pursued the personnel down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was noticed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a news conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He noted the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a pretext to provoke conflict for federal officials to deploy the troops to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – every NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the raid, along with NY's governor.
"Yet again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It needs to cease," a contender stated.
New York City community groups expressed outrage also.
"ICE descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to public safety and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," said the leader of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has said it refrains from arrest or detain US citizens. Yet, external research has revealed that numerous American nationals have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide lately.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the current administration. Protests opposing ICE are ubiquitous as are claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Recently, a document filed by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of women with child in government custody.
