Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the rising price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the service has removed problematic content and banned related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.

Within minutes of entering one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Details and Costs

Within these communities, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious health risks”.
