The former Liverpool manager admits a return to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that returning someday remains an option. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful nine-year spell featuring a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait for three decades, currently occupies roles as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group and providing guidance to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
They secured the league title under Arne Slot, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would welcome the possibility of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with the podcast host: “I declared I won't manage another team within the country. Which implies if then it’s Liverpool...absolutely. In theory, it could happen.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests I could make the decision down the line, I don’t know. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on which situations must arise to tempt his return to management, he revealed he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I don’t even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,” he said. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing under bad weather for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to interviews multiple times weekly or constant media duties weekly.
“I don’t miss the dressing room as a dressing room, however, dining out with the team talking freely, that’s nice. We won a lot of games meaning regularly a very good mood at the club. I can still hear the captain's chuckle in my ear for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended of the current boss, praising him due to the changes that took the title last term. They've been defeated a string of losses in all competitions after a summer spending spree, though he denied the notion of it representing a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if spoken against. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, incredible player. They have a strong balanced team. You don’t have to worry regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in in 2020, and the effect for the team. The Portugal international died tragically in a vehicle collision together with his sibling in July.
“How do you replace a person like him? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. I can’t imagine the team environment absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss about it. A devastating blow for all the boys too. Not a single person would cite it as an excuse though it's a fact. Being in that space which he filled completely. Handling this emotionally is challenging. Overwhelming.”
