While Swimmers Fled Attack, Popular Picture Captures Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, like many others in the area, heard pops echoing around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. This turned out to be a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He moved at something that undoubtedly every part of you would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams caring for many the injured.

Community Reaction and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the local area, with the beach facility beside the site of the attack becoming a impromptu hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the water to assist people who were struggling.

In the days after the tragedy, statements of support were shared. An online statement expressed appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The squad of rescuers published a communication, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the incident commenced through to late that night.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” said a local official.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our iconic beaches protected for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the atrocity of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such evil.”
